The Phantom Menace by Terry Brooks The Trade Federation has blockaded Naboo. Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi are dispatched to settle the dispute. Taking orders from Darth Sidious, the Trade Federation sabotages the mission, forcing the Jedi to escape with Queen Amidala, her retainers. and the Gungan Jar Jar Binks. They take refuge on Tatooine to make repairs and are introduced to the young, human podracer, Anakin Skywalker.

Era: Republic, 32 years Before the Battle of Yavin.
Author: Terry Brooks
ISBN: 0-345-43411-0 (Del Rey)

Though there are many things different, due to changes during filming, it is the added scenes that stand out. Anakin is introduced within the first pages of the book, allowing more glimpses into his life: he relationships with his mother, Watto, his friends. In one scene, Watto sends him to purchase items from the Jawas. Anakin takes C-3PO with him, and they encounter a Tusken Raider. Terry takes the opportunity to show Anakin as the good, decent, well-meaning child he is, making his fall from grace so much more tragic. I enjoyed the movie, and I am happy with Terry’s writing style.
