Books Read and Reviews: I read seven books and managed a bit of diversity again this month. Besides my normal diet of fantasy/paranormal, I read one historical romance and one historical mystery. However, I did not do as good a job posting new or back-logged reviews. I only managed one. On the bright side, the last two books I just read have write-ups already written, so I foresee them being posted here in the near future.
Reading Challenges: I expect to have the Off the Shelf Challenge goal met by the end of the month. I’m in the middle of reading a book that’s on the “Sweet 16” list: that makes 29, so I’ll only need one more book, whether it’s one from the list or a book I’ve had since 2009 or earlier. Also expected to finish this month, the Pub 2011. I’ve already read one book and could easily end up reading another book published in 2011. Then again, I could end up completing both or neither this month. Bookshelf bingo is still dictating what I read at this point.
Goals (yearly totals): I intended to start listening to audiobooks again this summer, but I never got around to it. If you notice my “number of pages read” stats below, you see that my yearly page total is 17,985 (as of 31 Aug). That includes audiobooks (using the page total from the physical books). Without those “pages” (totaling 1,823), my actual total is 16,162. If I keep up an average of 2,000 pages per month between now and the end of the year, I could just hit 25,000 mark. I did not set a goal for number of pages read this year, but I would really like to reach that mark. I’m pretty strict on what page I consider the “last” in a book: I do not count excerpts or other material like author’s notes. If the story ends on page 498, than that’s the page number I go with, even if there’s a 20-page preview following it. For this reason, I could easily fall short by a hundred pages when all is said and done. Starting with the next update, I will change the stats to reflect the “without audiobooks” total.
Also, there will be a difference in number of books read. I already have it set up to show the breakdown, so that won’t change too much. However, in all the other places that I’ve set the goal for 60 books (like Good Reads and Shelfari), I don’t count the audiobooks. I listened to a total of 5 audio books this year, so depending where you look, I’m either 5 books or 10 books from that goal. I will be changing my Master Reading List — I will list the audio books separately on that page, so the numbers match what Good Reads say. Why the change? Just want a bit of consistency — yeah, I know, late in the game, but I will try to keep the set-up the same for next year.

Note: I will continue to count audiobooks toward “total pages read”, using the physical book’s page count. If I own a copy, the page number will be the page the story ends on (not counting any excepts, author’s notes, etc.). If I don’t, I will get the page number from a on-line source (Amazon, Goodreads, etc). Unless otherwise noted, the audiobooks count toward the two audiobook challenges only.
