This is a little later than I intended.  I joined another round of bookshelf bingo over on Goodreads.  Just started this weekend and I volunteered to be the team captain.  More teams this round, so there are less players per team.  This should be interesting.

I posted the January update for my personal challenge, Reading has Its Rewards, yesterday.  It will continue to be its own update, separate from this. I don’t know if it will always be posted before the monthly update, however.  It just worked out that way this time.

Since I’m playing bookshelf bingo again, I’ve decided to drop the Teaser Tuesday, Waiting on Wednesday, and the two Friday memes.  I like doing them, but I’m finding it hard to take time to visit other blogs.  If I decide to start participating again, it may only be once a month (example: do a monthly Waiting on Wednesday).

I got off to a pretty good start with several challenges.  I expect to complete the Speculative Fiction, and possibly the Sci-Fi Reading Challenges quickly due to bingo.  Also, I’m thinking of extending the Reading the RITAs Challenge to the end of the year.  Probably add this years nominees, if I have them, when they are announced.

As for reviews, I posted two and have several in various states of readiness.  Two just need to have some more tweaking done, and the rest are in rough draft.  I hope to have at least the first two posted in February.

In December, I participated in two events.  They were the Top 10 Week and the Wrapping  Up 2011 Read-a-thon.

The Top 10 Week was fun, but it was also a lot of work.  I had a difficult time picking what should be on some of the lists.  As a result, I never made a Favorite Character list and I didn’t get to visit as much toward the end as I did in the beginning of the week.  My lists:

The Read-a-thon was a success for me.  I really wasn’t sure how it would turn out since the only read-a-thons I’ve participated in were the 24-hour type.  I’m so glad I took the chance because I completed four books!

Statistics: At the bottom of this post are my usual statistics, but there are a couple that I want to mention that aren’t reflected in that information.

• Of the 68 books I completed in 2011, 18 were published in 2011.  That means approximately 27% (26.5%) were new books.
• This is the first year in a long while that I read more than 3 books by one author: Nalini Singh (7 books)
• Two authors have three books each: Deborah Cooke and Thea Harrison
• Four authors have two books each: Suzanne Collins, Christina Henry, Sharon Ashwood, and Lara Adrian

Over the past few years, I’ve given myself certain criteria for what books count toward this challenge. Naida herself doesn’t limit what type, as long as it’s a story involving romantic love between two people, it’s good. It doesn’t even have to have a happy ending. Unrequited or tragic love, in her book, counts.

For 2012, I’ve decided some of my self-imposed criteria will be uniform. What I mean by that is:

• All five books must be written by new-to-me authors
• No Young Adult
• No category romances, including books written under any of the Harlequin imprints (Mira, Luna, HQN, etc)

In the past, I allowed for category and Young Adult. Since I read a lot of romance and the requirements are low for both this and the Harlequin challenge, I felt I could make it more interesting by not “allowing” the same books to count for both.  However, I will still cross-challenge books from these two with other challenges (for example, Men in Uniform, Off the Shelf, etc). Also, this will help eliminate more books from my huge reading pile.

Now for the book-specific criteria.  I will read one:

1. Historical (no paranormal elements)
2. Contemporary (no paranormal elements; no romantic suspense)
3. Speculative Fiction (this includes: science-fiction, paranormal, steampunk, dystopian, post-apocalyptic, etc.)
4. Romantic Suspense (no paranormal elements)
5. Semi-Wild Card (still adheres to the general criteria, but can be any type or romance)

As you can see, speculative fiction pretty much covers, well, everything supernatural or fantastical. Vampire? Yep, that would fall under Horror or Fantasy. Shape-shifters? Ditto. Star Wars is definitely space opera.

So, what’s the point of doing two challenges that are similar (the Sci-Fi Challenge covers much of the same themes)? Well, I could limit myself to reading just the space and alien-themed books for the Sci-Fi Challenge and everything else for the Speculative Fiction Challenge, or some other variation.  Regardless, I will be doing the Excited level (six book).

Not a good reading month for me.  One book.  All I managed to finish was one book.  And that one book?  I actually started in October.  Currently, I have three books waiting for my attention: Bespelling Jane Austen, First Grave on the Right, and Catching Fire.  It’s not that I can’t get into them, it’s just that I haven’t devoted any time to reading lately.  I started Catching Fire so I could complete the 2nd in a Series Challenge.  I’m enjoying both the Jane Austen anthology and First Grave on the Right, so I will be picking those back up.  Soon.  I’m beginning to think that, perhaps, I should start considering October my unofficial “year end” for reading challenges.

I also only posted one review.  It would have been two, but I haven’t taken the time to rewrite/revise the second one yet.  It’s for Darkfire Kiss.  I had issues with the heroine and I’m trying not to be snarky.  It’s not as bad as it was when I first read the book, time has soften some of that, but I tend to backslide if I spend too much time looking at it.

November was the month I prepared for next year’s reading.  I signed up for several blog-hosted challenges, I unveiled my personal challenges, and I set up my 2012 pages.  Though I didn’t plan on it, I also ditched the Thesis framework — I don’t know enough about the technical side (unlike html) to attempt major changes in the layout.  I initially switched to one of the themes that comes with WordPress (Twenty-Eleven), but I liked the Twenty-Ten theme better.  We’ll see how long this one lasts.

I’ve been keeping up with the “Waiting on Wednesday” meme.  I try to have at least three Wednesdays worth of posts scheduled, so I’m not scrambling on Tuesdays.  I also have a tentative schedule of which books will be featured so I know before I start a new entry which book is next, based on its release date.  The meme itself is quite popular, so there are a lot of participants.  It’s a bit daunting to try and visit all of them.  I’m thankful for the bloggers who stop by and leave a comment.

I signed up for two book swaps and The Christmas Spirit Reading Challenge.  I got my gifts this past week — though I have no idea who sent me the book for the Book Geeks Gift Exchange.  I will be doing a separate post for those this week, to display the books and thank my Santas.  And, no, I haven’t started the challenge yet.
