Flashback. . .2006

Murder of a Small-Town Honey When Skye Denison left Scumble River years ago, she swore she’d never come back. Now, having been fired from her job, jilted by her boyfriend, and rejected by her credit cards, she has reluctantly returned. Immediately, Skye’s determination to keep a low profile as the new school psychologist is assaulted by an army of small-town busybodies and well-meaning family members who can’t wait pry into her life, dole out advice, and volunteer her services in the Chokeberry Days festival. And when the fair erupts in chaos and controversy, Skye closes the event down altogether by finding a dead body.

Who: Skye Denison, school district psychologist and Simon Reid, coroner

Skye Denison returns to her small town after getting fired from her job and dumped by her fiancé. She likes her independence (she refused to move back in with her parents). I don’t think she sees herself as a failure. Though there are no details in this book, Skye was fired for insubordination, and she’s seems like the type who would go against her boss if it was for a good reason. And being dumped may have been a result of her being fired.

Skye and her brother, Vincent, seem to be disappointments to their parents. Vincent owns a hair salon. Their father wishes Vincent had shown more interest in the farm or, the very least, had a more manly profession. May, their mother, rather see her daughter in the more traditional roles. She also goes on about Skye’s weight, among other things, and I thought she was a bit spiteful.

I thought that Skye and Simon came together too quickly, considering the bad first meeting. I didn’t expect them to be dating before the book ended. I also thought we spent too much time learning what Skye was wearing. It felt like we got a in-depth report every time she changed clothes.

Clever idea: the chapter titles were song titles.
