Monthly Update – June 2010

I began the month of June with the expectation that it wouldn’t be a good reading month, what with the move and all. However, I at least expected to finish In For a Penny by the end of the month. Some days, I just didn’t feel like reading and most of those, I should have been packing, not goofing off.

On June 28th, the packers came and hauled away my stuff. Most of it anyway. I’ve found a few items like a bag a yarn that should have been packed but I somehow over looked. Then there’s the stuff I didn’t get to go through in time to be pack, plus the things I knew were going with me in the car (paperwork, the laptop, a selection of books), and some personal effects from the office. And approximately $140.00 in new books bought after the packing was done.

This move was a long time coming. I work for the US Army, as a government civilian. The organization I work for was earmarked by Congress as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) commission. The command will relocate from leased spaced in Alexandria, Virginia to a newly built facility at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Initially, I wasn’t too thrilled with the move. I have no problem leaving the DC Metro area. I grew up in a military family so the actual moving process is no big deal.  And moving away from family wasn’t an issue either — I got left back in the States when my father got orders to Germany back in the early 90’s (I was over the age of 21 and wasn’t a student), so this is nothing.  It was a transportation thing — which has since been resolved.  Besides, staying in Virginia would mean I’d have to take the first  job I got offered or be separated from the government, and then I would have had to find an affordable place to live (my old room mate and friend moved to Tennessee back in 2007).  Too much uncertainty.

It’s really late — and I spent all day packing so the van could be loaded.  I need to get some sleep.  In a few short hours, I will be on the road — headed west.

And I still haven’t finished Ms. Lerner’s book.  🙄

  1. I don’t mind moving. I just don’t like packing and physically moving boxes. Lol. Hopefully I will be moving into a bigger place in December. I have already decided to save up and hire movers. This time, I won’t be lifting anything other than my books!

    • Part of the perks of making a government-backed move is that they (the movers) do all the packing and the lifting, and the government foots the bill. 🙂
