Moon Called (Patricia Briggs)

I didn’t realize he was a werewolf at first. My nose isn’t at its best when surrounded by axle grease and burnt oil — and it’s not like there are a lot of stray werewolves running around. — Moon Called (Patricia Briggs)

My thoughts: This is a very good beginning. Right off, the reader knows the speaker (Mercy Thompson) can tell someone is a werewolf by smell (normally, anyway). It also means there’s something special about Mercy as well, and that she must work around cars. The reader can assume, by the wording, that the person she’s referring to really is a werewolf, as Mercy herself soon learns.
