From Good Reads.com: Raine is a sorceress of moderate powers, from an extended family of smugglers and thieves. With a mix of street smarts and magic spells, she can usually take care of herself. But when her friend Quentin, a not-quite-reformed thief, steals an amulet from the home of a powerful necromancer, Raine finds herself wrapped up in more trouble than she cares for. She likes attention as much as the next girl, but having an army of militant goblins hunting her down is not her idea of a good time. The amulet they’re after holds limitless power, derived from an ancient, soul-stealing stone. And when Raine takes possession of the item, it takes possession of her. Now her moderate powers are increasing beyond anything she could imagine—but is the resumé enhancement worth her soul?

1. Reason for choosing this book:
Seen it reviewed, and liked, by other book bloggers. During a round of bookshelf bingo, it was one if the books I had that fit the shelf, so I read it. Ordered the rest of the series before I was finished with the book.
2. Reasons for liking/disliking this book:
Raine reminded me of Kate Daniels in many was. She’s protective of those she cares about and she won’t sit idly by while others put themselves in danger because of her. Plus, she’s sarcastic.
Raine troubles begin because she was looking out for a friend and employee. Raine’s a seeker: she finds missing objects and people. Her friend, Quentin, is a reformed thief — though he seems to be backsliding and that’s how she ends up in the alley across from the residence Quentin is about to break into.
Things go wrong and now Raine stuck with a mysterious amulet that she can’t get rid off, and she’s attracted the attention of several factions who all want the amulet — and what the amulet will lead them to. This unwanted popularity brought her to the attention of a very nasty goblin grand shaman, a prince-in-exile trying to overthrow his horrible older brother, and the head of a group of warrior-mages who are responsible for keeping destructive magical objects out of the hands of those who would use them for evil.
Speaking of Mychael — he catches on pretty quick to the fact that Raine can’t be ordered to do something, just because he says so — even when it’s in her best interest to do so. Practical, professional, and polite describes him perfectly (couldn’t resist :D). Raine’s more receptive to cooperating when he asks her to do something.
3. Reasons for recommending this book:
The humor. Raine. Mychael.
