Notes on a BookSometimes, the notes I take after reading a book are enough to further expand into some kind of review. Other times, I don’t take enough and/or wait too long to expand upon them. And then there are the times I don’t bother writing anything down immediately (thinking I might do so later), and end up having to spend time trying to remember what I liked/didn’t like. So, for those time when I fall too far behind or don’t have enough notes, I decided that I will just post what I have as “notes on” that particular book.

The Kingdom (Amanda Stevens)

Title: The Kingdom
Author: Amanda Stevens
Copyright: 2012 (MIRA); 376 pgs.
ISBN: 978-0-7783-1277-2
Series: The Graveyard Queen #2
Genre: Paranormal Mystery

From Goodreads: My name is Amelia Gray. They call me The Graveyard Queen. I’ve been commissioned to restore an old cemetery in Asher Falls, South Carolina, but I’m coming to think I have another purpose here.

Why is there a cemetery at the bottom of Bell Lake? Why am I drawn time and again to a hidden grave I’ve discovered in the woods? Something is eating away at the soul of this town—this withering kingdom—and it will only be restored if I can uncover the truth.

Comments: Creepy. And GOTHIC. This is the second book in The Graveyard Queen series. Amelia’s been hired to restore a cemetery in Asher Falls, South Carolina. Once prosperous, Asher Falls is all but derelict — a ghost town.

THE KINGDOM is an apt title. Amelia refers to graveyards as her “kingdom”. In this case the title refers to Asher Falls, with it’s old, wealthy and manipulative king, Pell Asher; the young, handsome heir-presumptive Thane; and a boat load of dark secrets. Amelia is swept right up into the town’s mysteries.

As for her love life, Amelia hasn’t gotten over Devlin, the haunted Charleston cop, but she still feels attracted to Thane. I really liked Thane. He has his own issues, but at least he’s not haunted.

Amelia learns why she’s able to see ghosts. And she gains a pet.

Looking forward to reading the third book.
